India is fortunate in possessing one of the world's most extensive and fertile lands, made up of the alluvial soil brought down in the form of fine silt by the mighty rivers.

Lying south of the Himalayas, these Great North Indian Plains consist of the Indus basin, the Ganga-Brahmaputra basin, and the tributaries of these mighty river systems.

The northern Indian region saw one of the earliest civilizations on earth, the Harappan or Indus Civilization. From than onwards, this region remained in the center of many great moments of human civilization.

Coming of Aryans; Vedic Age; the age of Great Epics; formation of Mahajanpadas; rise and fall of great empires like Mauryas, Guptas, Delhi Sultanate, and Mughals; and at the end of it all the oppressive British, and the freedom of India in 1947.
